Mathura
Walk the land of Krishna - temples, ghats and the eternal song of the Yamuna.
IndiaWhy travellers love it
Mathura is one of Hinduism's seven sacred cities - the birthplace of Lord Krishna, where every lane, ghat and temple carries the story of the divine cowherd. At its heart stands the Krishna Janmabhoomi complex, marking the very spot of Krishna's birth, while the ghats along the Yamuna come alive each evening with the lamps and chants of the river aarti.
A short distance away lies Vrindavan, the playground of Krishna's childhood, where the beloved Banke Bihari Temple draws devotees in joyous crowds and dozens of historic shrines line its winding streets. Pilgrims also circle sacred Govardhan Hill on the parikrama path, completing a circuit of Braj that has been walked in devotion for centuries - a journey as much of faith as of travel.
