Northeast India
Rhinos, high monasteries and living root bridges across three wild states.
IndiaWhy travellers love it
Northeast India is the country's last great frontier - and this sweep through Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya runs from the floodplains of the Brahmaputra to high Himalayan monasteries and the wettest hills on earth.
In Assam, drive through tea country to Kaziranga National Park and go on safari in the world's stronghold of the one-horned rhinoceros, with elephants, wild buffalo and rich birdlife alongside. The spectacular mountain road of Arunachal then climbs to Tawang and its great monastery - one of the largest in India - before the route descends to Meghalaya for Shillong, the 'Scotland of the East', and a day amid the waterfalls and living root bridges of Cherrapunji.
